A wall build across a river to hold back the water and form lake behind it known as Dam.

•what is the main aim behind building a dam?  

 Dams are built for more than one purpose like:-.

•to generate hydroelectricity

•water supply for irrigation

•flood control

•fulfill the need of water for drinking.

•providing open water for navigation e.t.c......

 some disadvantages of dam.

•it have a harmful effect on marine life.
•It  resulted in displacement of local communities.
•it also induced earthquake and caused waterborne diseases.
•it submerged a large area of forest under water.
•it leads to a great soil-erosion.
•sometimes it also causes floods.
•water logging is also a big problem caused by dams.

Note:-Tabela dam in Pakistan is world's largest dam.

In india there is about 5,202 large dams according to the Central water commission (CMC)
